Diomaris Mejia was found dead at her Lawrence apartment on Salem Street after family members asked officers to perform a welfare check around 7:45 a.m. on Dec. 26.
The candlelight vigil to honor her will be held at 5 p.m. at 243 Salem St. in Lawrence.
Santana Guerrero Temporo was arrested on Friday, Dec. 29, as a fugitive in connection with Mejia’s death, authorities said. The 53-year-old man was charged as a fugitive from justice in a Texas court this week. It's unclear when he'll be returned to Massachusetts.
“It is my hope that the fact that this individual is now in custody, will aid the family in the healing process,” Lawrence Police Acting Chief William Castro said. “On behalf of the Lawrence Police Department, I wish to offer our heartfelt condolences to them as they mourn this tragic loss.”
Mejia wanted her two children in the Dominican Republic to have a better life, her family told NBC.
